The Writing Process

Chapter 2 emphasizes the connection between reading and writing and outlines a process for writing that will assist the student in writing more efficiently and with greater ease. The process, which consists of three major steps, can be applied to any writing task. The process includes the following steps or stages:
- Prewrite: generate ideas before you start your first draft
- Identify your thesis or controlling idea.
- Support your thesis with evidence.
- Organize your evidence.
- Write the first draft.
- Revise the essay.
