For language to commumicate, words must have accepted definitions. Without definition, you would say a word, and it would mean one thing to you but perhaps something completely different to a friend. Without a common understanding, the two of you would talk at cross-purposes, missing each others meanings. Writing a definition is not a simple task. In chapter 10, you will gain an understanding of various strategies for expanding definitions far beyond the single-word synonyms or brief phrases that dictionaries provide.
