The Campaign Process
Learning Objectives

In general, after you finish reading and studying this chapter, you should understand the following:

  • the structure of the campaign: the process of seeking election
  • what we actually vote for: the candidate or the campaign. In other words, can a good campaign make us vote for a bad candidate and vice versa?
  • the two most important modern campaign challenges: raising money and communicating through the media
  • the 1996 presidential campaign and election
  • campaign finance laws and recent efforts at reform
