In general, after you finish reading and studying this chapter, you should understand the following:

  • the goals of U.S. foreign and military policy
  • the meaning of grand strategy and how the U.S. adopts its policies in order to pursue it
  • the roots of modern U.S. foreign and military policy and how these policies evolved slowly as America became a world power
  • the expanding global role of the United States and the policies followed by the U.S. during the Cold War
  • the machinery of foreign policy, including parts of the bureaucracy, Congress, and the president
  • the challenges to presidential powers by Congress, the press, the public and the bureaucracy
