The Texas Legislature
Learning Objectives
|
The Texas legislature is one of three branches of the Texas state government. The Texas legislature is composed of two chambers, the Senate and the House of Representatives. (The Texas legislature and its two chambers should not be confused with the national legislative branch known as Congress and its two chambers. Like the Texas legislature, Congress has two chambers called the Senate and the House of Representatives; however, the national legislative branch and its two chambers are separate from the Texas legislative branch and its two chambers.)
This chapter describes the structure and membership of the Texas legislature as well as its key leaders. It describes the legislative process and how members of the Texas legislature make legislative decisions. It examines the relationship between the Texas legislature and the governor. Finally, it explores changes in the legislative branch including changes in the power granted to legislative leaders and changes in the demographics of legislative members.
