Chapter Summary

Chapter 4 focuses on reviewing literature in general, and the literature review as its own genre in particular. Thus your instructor may use this chapter to discuss reviewing prior research as a part of the research report (Chapter 3) or the research proposal (Chapter 6). Your instructor may also use this chapter to examine the literature review.

Chapter 4 provides useful advice on reading prior research and recognizing trends across studies. You will be introduced to a number of important basic skills, including strategies for identifying topics and locating sources, advice on reading sources, looking for patterns across studies, and using common patterns and principles for organizing the review. You will find these skills useful as you attempt to situate your own projects in the context of their field's existing research base.

Chapter 4 also covers the details of documentation—including two prominent citation systems in scientific publications, both of which are illustrated in sample texts in Part Two of the book—and the still developing system(s) for citing Web sites. In addition, this chapter discusses the use citations in scientific argumentation.
