Chapter Overview

Chapter 21 provides an overview of the processes involved in writing college-level research papers, emphasizing the use of rhetorical skills in the approach to research writing. This chapter identifies seven essential skills for writing research papers across the curriculum.

By the end of the chapter, you should understand the following:

1. Students are often baffled by their professors' expectations for research papers. Novice writers of research papers often produce the "data dump" and the "train of boxcar quotations" papers, neither of which is usually satisfactory.

2. In order to produce satisfactory college-level research papers, you need to know how academic discourse works and understand that each discipline asks different kinds of research questions, and frames them in different ways.

3. Thinking rhetorically about the search process will help you find the best sources most efficiently.

4. Scholars conduct research for multiple reasons. Their aim is not simply to find answers but also to make answers.

5. In addition to finding sources, you need to read them rhetorically and learn to integrate them into your own writing, using the conventions appropriate to the discipline in which you are working.
