Chapter Objectives

This chapter focuses on the process of writing—a series of tasks that are repeated until you have created a finished work.

Writing begins with planning, in which you clarify what you’re writing about and for whom you’re writing. Once you’ve done this, you can begin to collect ideas, develop them in a draft, revise the draft, and edit your work. These four steps—planning, writing, revising, and editing—are repeated until you have crafted a developed, coherent, and purposeful piece.

After reading this chapter, you will:

• know how to plan a writing assignment, taking audience and purpose into account
• understand the back-and-forth nature of the writing process
• know the difference between revising, editing, and proofreading
• be able to conduct a peer review conference as part of revising your work
