Shifts and Mixed Constructions
Objectives

In this chapter, you will learn to identify and correct unnecessary shifts in person, number, tense, voice, and mood. A writer must maintain a consistent orientation in formal writing, and shifts of this sort will make the reader less certain of the writer's meaning or competence. Mixed constructions also distract or confuse the reader, so you need practice identifying and correcting these errors as well. The examples and exercises provide you with the practice you need in order to rid your writing of these errors and distractions.
