The semicolon is a difficult punctuation mark for many writers because it seems to function like both a comma and a period. It is, in fact, a signal for a partial separation between clauses, and this chapter allows students to gain greater control over the use of the semicolon. You will learn the primary use of the semicolon, which is to join related independent clauses, and then learn to recognize the situations in which a partial stop is considered to be appropriate. In the exercises in this chapter, you will be asked not only to use semicolons accurately, but also to be able to explain why you have chosen to use this punctuation mark.
