Quotation Marks
Objectives
|
This chapter provides a very useful reference tool for writers who need to know how and when to use quotation marks. Students review the basic functions of quotation marks--to indicate direct quotation, to set off dialogue, to indicate the titles of short works, and to emphasize particular words. Students also learn how to use single quotation marks within double quotation marks, the placement of other punctuation marks in relationship to quotation marks, and unnecessary or inappropriate uses of quotation marks. These skills are particularly important for student writers who must make proper use of resources in research writing (see 34f). Students can use the exercises for practice in the use of quotation marks in single sentences and in paragraphs.
