This chapter presents you with the basic information regarding the uses of abbreviations and numbers. You will learn here that the various academic disciplines regard the use of abbreviations and numbers in markedly different ways. In some disciplines, abbreviations are used freely; in others, abbreviations are rare. You will learn that you must consult the style manuals adopted by the various disciplines in order to be sure of the standards for particular kinds of writing. However, this chapter reviews the large number of possible uses of abbreviations and numbers, and you will have many opportunities to learn the options and to practice their use in exercises.
