Writing and Reading in the Humanities

This chapter is the first of three chapters on academic writing and reading in the academic disciplines. In this chapter, you will learn the significance of the kinds of questions pursued in the humanities (literature, history, and philosophy), with emphasis on analyzing, interpreting, and evaluating sources. In the five sections of this chapter, you are brought through various strategies for writing in the humanities; the significance of reading in primary and secondary sources; the various kinds of writing assignments in these disciplines; ways of responding to and writing about literature; and a sample student essay illustrating the analysis of a short story. You will also be introduced to a comprehensive list of reference materials in the humanities.
