Writing and Reading in the Social...
Objectives
|
The social sciences (psychology, sociology, economics, political science, and anthropology) seek to find patterns to explain human behavior. In this chapter, you will briefly review the underlying theories of human behavior shared by the social sciences, as well as the distinctive modes of inquiry to be found in this area. You will consider issues related to writing in the social sciences, reading critically in these fields of study, the kinds of assignments common to these fields, and the writing of social science research papers. You will learn the distinctions between informative and argumentative writing, the laboratory experiment and the field (or case) study, and quantitative and qualitative reports. You will also be provided with a complete sample research paper and a comprehensive list of reference materials in the social sciences.
