Writing for the Web
Objectives

In this chapter, you will find an overview of writing for the Web. Beginning students will learn the basic processes of doing this sort of writing, but more experienced Web designers will also benefit from this chapter, with its listing of URLs and books provided as further resources. You will learn that the process of Web-based writing is similar to that of writing an essay, but you will also learn that the audience for Web-based writing is not as likely to read in a linear fashion. Because Web-based readers are more likely to value briefer, linked units on the Web, writers for the Web need to learn how to adjust the rhetoric of their writing. You can see this principle in action with a Web-based reworking of a print-based student essay from Chapter 6. You will note how the Web-based version of this essay is basically different in its structure.
