Milton Glaser comments on the "social effects of restaurants," noting that "in the right restaurant, you feel enlarged." Visit your own favorite restaurant and try to examine it anew. How is it designed? Is it spacious, elegant, and modern? Or is it small, homey, and comfortable? How does being in that space make you feel? In what ways does the design of this restaurant contribute to that feeling? Write a few paragraphs about the ethos of the restaurant and how its design contributes to this overall ambiance. If you have a digital camera, bring it to the restaurant so you can take some photographs and include them in your essay. You might also consider interviewing the restaurant's proprietor for some comments on the restaurant's design.
Using design software (or, if you don't have access to such software, using colored pencils and paper) to create a logo for the restaurant you wrote about for the first project. Think about what fonts and colors will best express the ethos of the eatery. How will you use elements of design to appeal to prospective clients?
