Definitional Argument Peer Revision Questions

Instructions: Read the essay you have been given and answer the following questions on a separate sheet of paper. Then, write a detailed memo addressed to the author (start it "Dear xxx:") in which you explain the paper's strengths and weaknesses. I'll collect the answers and the memo at the end of class.
  1. What did you like most about this paper? Be specific.
  2. Does the essay fulfill the assignment (is it a definitional argument)? If not, why not?
  3. What is the definitional issue the writer is addressing? Is the issue controversial (could people reasonably disagree about it)? Do you find it interesting? Why or why not?
  4. Are all the parts of an effective argument present in this essay (introduction, claim, supporting reasons and evidence, consideration and/or refutation of alternative viewpoints)? If not, what is missing?
  5. What is the writer's claim?
  6. List the reasons the writer offers to support the claim. Is each reason supported by evidence (examples, statistics, etc.)?
  7. How much space does the writer devote to alternative viewpoints? (A sentence, a paragraph, etc.) Is this adequate? Does the writer treat opposing opinions fairly?
  8. What is the persona or ethos the writer creates for him/herself? How does he/she achieve this?
  9. Does the writer use appropriate language for his/her audience? Give an example.
  10. Which sections of the essay should the writer focus on for his/her revision? Explain why and offer suggestions.
