Alternate Tables of Contents
Instructors who want to organize their courses around rhetorical modes or around genres will find two useful tools here: one table of contents arranged rhetorically and one arranged by genre. These tables of contents supplement the detailed contents printed in the book.
Visual Rhetoric and Visual Literacy
Click here to get annotated links to credible Web sites that give good background information about visual rhetoric and visual literacy. These sites have been selected according to their usefulness for class-related activities. In addition, instructors can learn more about teaching visual rhetoric and literacy, as well as the history of visual rhetoric and visual literacy. This section also includes information on the academic discipline of visual rhetoric, ideas for class projects and bibliographies of visual rhetoric and visual literacy.
Writing with and about Images
This section suggests ways to get students writing about images in the form of questions. It is meant as a supplement to Beyond Words, and proposes different ways to discuss images than are found in the book. The questions and concepts in this section relate to more traditional versions of rhetoric. The questions found here should help students brainstorm ideas to translate their impressions about images into words.
Reading Checklists and Handouts
This section is divided into different checklists taken from the book to provide to students, who can use the checklists as a way for approaching and discussing different texts in different media. The questions provided here supplement the ones already printed in the book.
WPA Outcomes Statement and Beyond Words
This section lays out the WPA Outcomes Statement and references parts of the book that correspond to the different Outcomes. The WPA Outcomes Statement is available online at: http://www.english.ilstu.edu/Hesse/outcomes.html. Sections of the book that seem germane to individual Outcomes are listed by page number or section.
