Student Resources
Welcome to the Student Resources section of the Companion Website for The Conscious Reader, now in its tenth edition. Since The Conscious Reader adheres to the Socratic belief that the unexamined life is not worth living, the readings in the text will invite you to think deeply about a wide variety of issues that affect you both personally and as a member of various groups. The resources in this section are intended to help you to use your writing to fully express your multi-faceted self.
The Discussion Exercises are designed to get you thinking about the key issues in each section of the text. You will be asked to brainstorm and write informally on these issues in order to prepare for the reading and for class discussions.
The Writing Exercises provide you with ways to respond to the reading and bring together some of the common themes addressed across the readings in each section, helping you to find connections among them.
The Web Explorations will ask you to go beyond the works included in The Conscious Reader and to explore and write in response to Internet resources that supplement the readings in the text. These sites may help to explicate or challenge the readings in The Conscious Reader. In either case, they will enrich your understanding of the issues raised.
Finally, the Web Destinations will jumpstart your further explorations into the issues raised in The Conscious Reader. There you will find links to research sites, further readings, and supplementary information to help you with your writing. Many of the sites provide audio and video, so youll be able to experience not only written texts, but texts that are presented in other media. This will serve to remind you that conscious reading in our time extends well beyond the written word.
