Summary

Of the many reasons why we read and write, perhaps the most primal is the desire to know ourselves—and have others know us—more fully. This section of The Conscious Reader collects the works of various authors involved in the process of self-discovery through writing.

The essays, stories, and poems offered in this section are public records of writers’ private experiences. These works explore various ways in which we may identify who we are—as citizens of a community, as members of a specific ethnic group, as men or women, and so on. As you read, you will be invited to explore and write about your self.

The writing you do as you investigate issues related to self and identity may take many forms: philosophical musings, public statements, critical analyses, or research reports. In this way, the works included in “The Search for Self” serve as a useful introduction to the self-aware, conscious reading and writing that the book encourages more generally
