Summary

Though many of the topics in The Conscious Reader allow for your input and response, the topic of education puts you in a position of particular expertise. After all, education has been your business for many years. Like Langston Hughes in “Theme for English B, ” you likely have a good deal to say to those responsible for your education thus far, both positive and negative. And so you have many motivations to write.

But not all of your responses need be personal. The many years of experience that you have had with education in conjunction with what you might learn about education through the readings in this section can also prepare you to form broader-based opinions about the role of education, the best methods for education, and whether there might be new ways to inspire generations to work toward a fruitful and “examined” life.

As you read the various selections here, you will both recall your own experiences with various facets of our educational system and can also imagine the experiences of others in different circumstances. You will be asked to consider issues of language acquisition, of student assessment, and of our attitudes toward past books and thinkers. All of the subtle and complex issues here will provide many occasions to think and write not only about education itself, but also about its implications for many other facets of our culture and others.
