Chapter 1 |
|
College graduates not only enjoy more social and self-esteem benefits, but they also earn more money in their careers than those with only a high school diploma. This chapter focuses on issues concerning student success in college. Suggestions include setting goals, creating a positive attitude, seeking excellence, making choices, seeking support, managing time, and setting priorities. Activities are provided for making a daily priority list, planning for the week, studying from the syllabus, using a syllabus in conjunction with the calendar, and creating a learning schedule. Additional suggestions are provided for achieving academic success. These include discussions on the importance of attending class, being prepared and on time for class, marking textbooks, communicating with instructors, reviewing lecture notes, and networking with other students. Other considerations include tape recording lectures, predicting exam questions, and using technology to communicate.
This chapter also includes a section on using the Internet. Instructions are given for acquiring a free e-mail address along with ideas for communicating with professors and other students via e-mail. Basic terms are defined and instructions are given for using search engines to locate information on the Internet. Strategies for searching, recording, and book-marking information are also provided.
