|
Recognizing the meaning of words is essential to reading comprehension. In this chapter you will learn strategies for expanding your vocabulary such as: identifying context clues; recognizing roots, prefixes, and suffixes; identifying "word families"; using a glossary; using a thesaurus; and understanding comparisons. More specifically, the types of context clues discussed are definition clues, elaborating details, elaborating examples, comparison, and contrast.
In addition to the topics mentioned above, tips for remembering new words through the use of association, concept cards, knowledge of word parts, and dictionary and glossary are provided. Specific instruction on the use of the dictionary includes: (1) guide words, (2) pronunciation, (3) spelling, (4) word meaning, (5) parts of speech, and (6) word origins. Examples and practice exercises are provided for all topics presented.
Finally, suggestions for using an electronic Thesaurus, subscribing to a mailing list, and participating in a newsgroup are discussed in relation to learning new vocabulary.
