How can you optimize your test-taking skills so that your scores reflect your knowledge and ability? In this chapter suggestions and exercises are provided for being prepared, staying alert, and seeking feedback on tests. Also, suggestions are given for taking standardized tests; these center on reading to comprehend, interacting with the passage, anticipating the content, relaxing, reading to learn, and recalling. In addition, instruction and exercises are given on understanding the major question types (main idea, detail, implied meaning, and purpose), types of test passages (factual, opinion, and fiction), and vocabulary questions.
Along with content-specific suggestions, hints on preparing for various modes of testing are given. These include suggestions for taking multiple-choice tests, true-false exams, and essay-type exams. Additional advice is given for predicting the correct answer on multiple-choice exams and understanding key words on essay exams.
