1 .		To most Americans, slavery suggests the use of human labor to produce agricultural goods, usually under harsh conditions. Some slavery of this type did exist in Greece and Rome, particularly on large estates. Ideas about Greek and Roman slavery were readily adapted to the New World with some exceptions. Classical slavery was not racist: slaves came from many regions as a result of military expansion. Slave tasks were highly varied, ranging from mining to tutoring, and could seem desirable and interesting compared to the poverty of routine agricultural life. As a result, some people sought to become slaves.
