Instructor Resources
Introduction

The Instructor Resources section of the Companion Website offers numerous materials to help you teach Writing Material. Many of these materials are found in other areas of the Companion Website. Writing Material encourages students to see themselves as writers, thinkers and researchers in their own right, and thus most resources for using the book are applicable to students and teachers alike. Therefore, the Instructor Resources contains many links to Student Resources. Other materials that are explicitly pedagogical are found in the "Teaching" section described below.

Additional Instructor Resources are available in the Instructor’s Manual, which is available in print form and as a password-protected PDF file (see the Instructor’s Manual page of this Companion Website). The Instructor’s Manual contains “General Tips for Teaching” for each reading. Based on our own experiences teaching these readings, we offer advice on how to approach classroom discussion, suggestions for additional readings that might be assigned with the selection, and suggestions for additional print-based resources for teaching the reading selection. For many readings, we discuss level of difficulty and style.

The Companion Website materials are organized as follows:

  • Readings. For each reading we provide "Web Destinations," Web sites that contain background information about the author, information about people or things mentioned in the readings, reviews and responses to the reading and other supplementary materials. We also include one "Web Activity" that asks a question about the reading raised by a related Web site.
  • Groupings. For each of the seven Suggested Groupings in the book, we include three to five additional questions and writing assignments. We also provide Web destinations relevant to the grouping’s topics and themes, as well as links to resources on common writing issues.
  • General Resources. The numerous General Resources links are divided into three main categories: Topical, Reading and Writing Resources, and Teaching Electronic Writing in the Classroom. The topical resources will direct you to a range of materials on the history of writing, new media, and the various themes of the Suggested Groupings. These links may be helpful if your course integrates outside research. The other sections offer various links to materials on critical reading, writing, researching, visual literacy skills, and teaching electronic writing in the classroom.
  • Teaching. This section of the Companion Website helps instructors navigate through various available resources and provides additional links. These includethe following:

Additional Readings. We have selected Web Destinations that can be assigned as readings to supplement those found in the book.

Alternative Suggested Groupings. Here we offer ways to group readings other than those suggested in the book.

Professional Resources for Courses on Technology, The History of Writing and New Media. This section contains pedagogical and professional materials relevant to the themes of the book.

Syllabi. Web-based syllabi on courses related to the themes of the book are listed here. Additional syllabi as well as Sample Student Essays can be found in the Instructor's Manual as well.
