Chapter Objectives

After reading Chapter 8, the student should be able to: - List the various types of economic interest groups with specific examples of each type.
- Review the roles of the lobbyist and the various kinds of lobbying tactics.
- Discuss the relationship between campaign contributions and PACs (Political Action Committees).
- Summarize how the media affects political life, specifically noting such sub-themes as media mergers, sound bites, media messages and profitability, news management, media campaign ads, and the medias relationship to public opinion.
- Discuss the political importance of the rise of new media, like the Internet, and alternative media forums, like talk radio.
