Unless you live in a big city, you probably don’t see many posters except in front of the movie theater or on campus—and it’s also possible that your campus, like ours, has a fairly restrictive policy on where posters and announcements can be hung. Where do you see posters in your community? Who uses posters, and to what ends? Why do you think people don’t use posters as much as they used to?
Following on the above project, imagine you are developing a poster for a friend’s band performance. In order to reach the widest number of people who are likely to attend, where are some creative places you could put your posters (without getting your friend into trouble)? Scout your campus and local community: look for where people congregate but also for unexpected places where they might see the poster and be drawn to it precisely because it is unexpected. Draw up a list, and then write a short reflection in which you generalize your observations about places where you can catch people’s eyes unexpectedly but effectively.
