Writing is mostly a skill that can be improved with practice. It is as important as speaking when we need to communicate information or ideas. In fact, writing is often better than speaking because it allows the reader to understand and remember information more completely. Writing is also a process, which will be discussed in the next chapter. Remember: one of the most important reasons to write is to gain understanding of the writing process and to use that process to improve as you write more. Reviewing Basic Grammar has helped many students improve their writing. In fact, most of the examples in the book are products of student writing. No two writers follow exactly the same writing practices, so another reason to write is to discover HOW you write. Some students are strong planners who know what they are going to write and who produce drafts that need only minor revisions. Some students are strong revisers who quickly jot down ideas without a lot of planning. Often this type of writer will revise their work several times before having a final draft. Whichever type of writer you find yourself to be, you must take the time to write in order to build your confidence and succeed at your class assignments. There are other important reasons to write. We write because good written communication skills are required in the modern workforce. We write to learn because writing is a way to understand and incorporate new knowledge. We write to communicate because writing is an effective way to reach others. And we write for ourselves in order to explore our hopes and dreams and to grow as people.
