Process Analysis explains how something is done, or how it works. Examples would be how to change the oil in a car, how to follow a recipe, how volcanoes erupt, or how lightening is created in an electrical storm. This type of writing either provides the reader with detailed instructions or information about what he/she wants or needs to know. Writing about a process means organizing information in sequential order, or the order in which they occur in the past, present or future. As a writer, you should be as detailed as possible, including any explanations, definitions, or cautions that may be of value to a reader. Limit your topic to a process the average person can understand. The key is to understand that as a result of reading your process, the average reader should be able to perform the steps and achieve the desired result or to better understand how something works.
