Topic 15: Persuading an Audience
Summary

Persuasion is a part of everyday life, whether it be an advertisement on radio or T.V. or a request one person makes of another. Persuasion is the attempt to convince others to change their points of view or to take action. It is carefully directed toward a specific audience with an appropriate tone. You must know about the subject and care about it in order to be convincing.

Analysis of the average audience reveals three main types: friendly, neutral, and hostile. Your persuasive strategy will change depending on what type of audience you are writing to. Effective persuasion also uses emotional appeal. That is in addition to facts and figures that support your argument, you will want to include real life examples of why your audience should change its attitude or take an action. Persuasion is the heart of any argument paper.
